Trashlab explores experimental art-design-technology practice between hacker and maker cultures, in the context of re/up-cycling and the increased availability of new fabrication tools.
Trashlab’s objective is to build up a community of people (artists, designers, hackers, makers, re/up-cyclers, activists) who are concerned with material and electronic waste in contemporary society, and tackle this problem with creative and tangential approaches. We follow the aim to encourage a peer-based learning environment related to hacking electronics, repair practices, appropriate technology for renewable energy production/usage, digital fabrication, reusing and re/up-cycling materials.

The Recycling Olympic Games (ROG) is an alternative sports event that is focused on creative waste reuse. During ROG,international teams compete for the title of “UpCycling Champion” --and a trophy! The project enables situation-specific creative production and performative actions to be happening at the site of ROG (and around Helsinki) for the duration of the games.
ROG was first held in 2013 as part of Pixelache/Pixelversity's Trashlab project. This year's ROG is presented as part of the Living Spaces festival, and will be located in Seppo Renvallin Puisto, an urban park that has been the...

In the first Trashlab of the year on the third of February, we are getting familiar with the new space and a set of tools. The material of month is scrap wood, which is coming as a by-product at the workshop. With the instruction of Jelle van der Beek (alias Puuguru), we will create and improvise with traditional, as well as more experimental toys for adults and kids.
The workshop is suitable for children, when joining under adult guidance.
In addition to this week’s material themed workshop, we also continue to give guidance collectively on fixing broken things, so bring them over and let’...
