Gaming the System opening Thursday 17.9

Gaming the System is an international city-wide art exhibition. It is created by the research group These Animals together with Helsinki Transport System's festival Taidelinja, Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture, and Pixelache. Situated in public space of Helsinki, the project seeks to engage with the citizens and visitors of Finland's capital by presenting participatory and multimedia artworks centred around the concept of play.

The exhibition will take place in areas such as metro stations, trams, around the hidden coast of the city and in an old ticket booth. Events range from a tour of the city underground, artistic games, ticket validator turned into a beat box, and a series of installations where one can donate or receive unused travel time. Amongst the international guests are Street Line Critics from Ireland. They invite passer-bys of Kulosaari metro tunnel to respond to questions about urban space by writing poetry on the ground and walls, creating a dialogue between places and cultures. SPART Action Group from York, UK, is creating an interactive machine that will dispense alternative tourist information randomly via SMS messaging.

About half of GtS is being featured in this year's Pixelache festival: R.A.T.I.S.M., The Fight Night, Street Line Critics - On Tour, and DISCORDION. We encourage everyone to check out the other projects in the exhibition, which will be open through the end of the festival (27.9).

The ppening reception is this week, Thursday 17 September 17th, from 17:00 - 19:00 in the southern ticket hall of Hakaniemi Metro station. A guided tour of the exhibition takes place on 21.9 at 14:00, starting also here. You can also find Gaming the System on Facebook.
