26.4. Waste management expedition to HSY Viikinmäki waste-water processing plant

The second Waste management expedition will take place on Friday afternoon 26.4. returns to Viikinmäki area, North-west Helsinki, this time to visit Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY)’s waste water management centre. Welcome to sign up to join!

The Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant, the largest in Finland, processes the domestic and industrial wastewater of Helsinki, Kerava, Tuusula, Järvenpää, Sipoo and of the central and eastern districts of Vantaa (in total about 800,000 inhabitants), and is primarily located inside rock. The wastewater treatment process employed is based on the ‘activated sludge’ method (Aktiivilietemenetelmä) and includes three phases: mechanical, biological and chemical treatment. Nitrogen removal has been enhanced with a biological filter that utilises denitrification bacteria. More information below.

Our host will be Mr. Yrjö Lundström, a specialist who knows the sludge process, and the wastewater treatment as well. He will speak English, but of course questions are welcome in Finnish. The tour will take place from 12.00 on site, and lasts 1.5-2 hrs. The tour is free but has a limit of 25 persons. Please sign up here in advance by 25.4.

During this expedition you will need to make your own way there to Hernepellontie 24. We meet outside the main gate. Take public transport bus 68 or 71 there (for example 68 leaving Rautatientori at 11.29 or Arabia at 11.45 will get you there on time). You are advised to wear proper shoes, and a bit warmer clothes than usually, as it is quite cold down there underground, but wearing a bigger coat could be too much.

Biofilia Open Lecture 11th April 2013

Semi Living Muscle actuators as evocative “matter” by artist, researcher Ionat Zurr / SymbioticA, 11th April, 2013 at 11:00 – 12:30

An interesting phenomenon is emerging, heralded by developments in the life sciences and applied technologies, coupled with the introduction of engineering principles; the further life is being instrumentalised, becoming a product for human manipulation, matter – whether living, semi living or non-living – is being attributed with vitality and agency. Some refer to this as a ‘new materialism’ – most notably by Gilles Deleuze, Manuel de Landa and Jane Bennett. More than anything this phenomenon further blurs the ontological, perceptual (and technological) boundaries between what we consider living, semi-living and non-living.

HIAP Talks 21.3. Angela Washko: Subversive strategies in online gamer culture

March 21, from 17–19, Kiasma Seminar Room

What does World of Warcraft, the massively popular multiplayer online role-playing game, have to do with feminism, public space, and performative artistic practice? HIAP Talks in March will investigate the gendered virtual spaces of video games.

New York-based artist Angela Washko (b.1986) will give a talk on her investigations into and performances within the particular political space that evolves in World of Warcraft. The talk will be followed by a panel with invited commentators who will bring into the discussion viewpoints from recent game research and development.

“I am creating videos from performances inside of World of Warcraft that investigate the relationship between female players and the intensely complex social communities within WoW. I am working on instituting a system in which players in my community are forced to take responsibility for their oppressive behavior, help to create an environment that encourages women gamers to participate, and present performances and videos to a public that is unaware that these communities exist”.

Latvian Women’s e-Crowns

Last summer June 2012, the eCrafts Collective (Ramyah Gowrishankar and Kati Hyyppä) made a journey to the Latvian countryside in order to explore traditional women’s costumes. They had the pleasure to stay in a residency at Interdisciplinary Art Centre SERDE, located in a small historical town called Aizpute, meeting many nice people who taught them traditional heritage crafts. Gowrishanker & Hyyppä’s explorations resulted in two eCrowns, which are pimped up versions of Latvian traditional single women’s headgear. It is a pleasure for Pixelache to highlight and promote them today on International Women’s Day.

Proposals for creative art+science, participatory, and open environmental education in Gulf of Finland / Baltic Sea Region

Six proposals are introduced below for creative art+science, participatory and open approaches to environmental education and awareness in the Gulf of Finland Year 2014- / Baltic Sea region. They were first presented by Andrew Gryf Paterson at the Gulf of Finland Year Trilateral Environmental Education seminar, Tallinn, 28.2.2013, and are part of an ongoing dialogue and cooperation with Russian NGO Friends of the Baltic, based in St. Petersburg.

The aims of the proposals are to invigorate previous cultural association and environmental NGO work in the region, including recent Luonto-Liitto -led Itämeri-lahettilas toiminta (Baltic Sea Ambassadors activity); promote the role of trans-disciplinary collaborations, open solutions and systems-thinking; connect younger and experienced generations of environmentalists, combine old+new commons perspectives; and insist on ecological conservation+knowledge sustainability. It is also hoped they contribute to expanding the scope of the emergent Open Sustainability movement, by integrating OpenGLAM (in Finland) and Open Education Resources initiatives.

Epilogue: Pixelache micro-residency on Food-info-activism

This post is made as the epilogue of my micro-residency at Pixelache during March 18-22 2013. You can find a post on my blog about my expectations and anticipation made on the first day, which was for me to make sense of the collaboration.

It’s been already two weeks after I’ve spent my time in Pixelache. It was rather short, in part because I was ill for a day, but also Pixelache’s mode of operations was quite hard to comprehend in the beginning as to why Pixelache is interested in Food-Info-Activism.

Camp Pixelache 2013 on Naissaar, Estonia

We are organizing a new edition of ‘Camp Pixelache’ on 17-19 May 2013 as part of the Pixelache Festival 2013 programme. This year Pixelache is organised as a dual-city festival (16-19.5.2013) in Helsinki-Tallinn around the overarching theme of ‘Facing North – Facing South.

The main venue for Camp Pixelache will be Naissaar (formerly Nargen, Nargö), an island located near Tallinn, 10 km away from the Estonian coast. The island was rumoured to be “Terra Feminarum” (the island’s Estonian name literally translates as ‘island of women’) but had until WWII a historic Estonian-Swedish fishing community. The island’s military history still leaves its traces in tangible and intangible forms: military buildings, sea-mine relics, heavy minerals, and a vague 3-month period following the October Revolution when it was declared an anarcho-syndicalist autonomous republic. Closed as a military island during the Soviet period, the island now has a few dozen permanent residents, boosted in summer time with many visitors, a classical music festival, and is a place to respect as an Estonian nature conservation area.

We have invited Mary Mellor to give a keynote presentation on Naissaar. Mary Mellor is a Social Science Professor at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), who has a long-standing interest in alternative, green and feminist economics. Within the concert hall and related buildings open workshops can also be organised.

We are calling out for presentations and workshops!
