If I was going to Ars Electronica this year then I would spend most of my time hanging out at the TELE-INTERNET venue, a ‘Hackerspace, (Un-)Conference, Exhibition, Performance and Social Installation’ during 2-6 September. Aram Bartholl has invited an extremely interesting mix of communities, collectives, networks, groups and individuals to participate in this showcase of contemporary online experimentation.
Media arts curator Anne Roquigny (fr) will be visiting Helsinki and giving a presentation on her work on september 7 from 18.00 onwards at Pixelache’s new office in Kaapelitehdas (Tallberginkatu 1 C, 4th floor)
The 10th edition of Pixelache Helsinki festival will take place between 10-13 March 2011.
As a sneak preview, we are happy to reveal information about three guest curators and programme themes they have proposed. These were selected from the open call which was sent out in spring 2010.
Upcoming, in advance of Helsinki Design Week, the Windowfarms Finland collective and the New York-based initiators Britta Riley and Ted Ullrich meet for first time.
The events they have scheduled at Hub Helsinki take place as a manifestation of trans-national collaboration in open design, urban food growers and technology exchange, focused on windowfarming.
See event information below and/or join Hub Helsinki’s facebook event.

Media Facades Festival will take place during 27 August – 2 September in seven cities: Berlin, Brussels, Helsinki, Liverpool, Budapest, Linz, Madrid.
A special Pixelache Feature will be presented at ISEA2010 RUHR. It consists of projects which explore our relationship with nature (Herbologies/Foraging Networks initiative + Terike Haapoja’s installations) and a consumer electronics hacking workshop by Koelse / Association of Experimental Electronics.
Pixelache Feature at ISEA2010 is a co-production of Pixelache & ISEA2010 RUHR, supported by AVEK and the Finnish Embassy Berlin.
Inspired by an urban street painting intervention in Berlin, the Helsinki based collective Länsiväylä asked people to join a guerilla operation to paint a bike lane on Hämeentie, one of the main roads leading through the Northern part of central Helsinki. During the day Hämeentie has very intense car traffic and causes a lot of noise in the neighbourhood.
The method used in the intervention was simple – paint was poured on the street and then people drove with bicycles on top of it, spreading the paint further. This action can be considered ’semi-illegal’ since the paint used in the operation washes away with water, so the traces of the action will remain on the street surface only temporarily.
Even though the intervention took place in the middle of the night (or maybe because of it) it attracted a huge crowd on participants.
If you missed this event then don’t worry, another collective bike intervention will take place in Helsinki very soon – the next Critical Mass event in Helsinki will be held on 10 August (more information in Finnish).

The Plektrum Festival, which runs in Tallinn from 25 August to 5 September, will feature robots and a chance to see the giant steps made by robotic technology in the form of lectures, films, exhibitions and music. Both this year’s Plektrum and next year’s festival are part of the Tallinn 2011 European Capital of Culture programme.
The theme of this year’s Plektrum – the eight in festival history – is “Would you love a robot?” The cultural festival will illuminate the crossroads between humankind, technology and contemporary culture.
The premier guest of the festival is world-renowned electronic music legend Karl Bartos, who was a core member of Kraftwerk in 1975-1991, responsible for popular tracks from acclaimed albums such as Radio-Activity, Trans Europe Express, The Man Machine, Computer World and Tour de France. Bartos, from 2004 to 2009 professor for Auditory Media Design at Berlin University of the Arts, will deliver a lecture on the development of music and technology at the KUMU Art Museum of Estonia auditorium and will play an audio-visual concert at Rock Cafe.
