Camping à la BarCamp

We have decided to try out BarCamp-style of programme format for our Camp Pixelache in Kerava. BarCamp is ‘an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment’, more information at www.barcamp.org. BarCamp is similar to a more generic OST / Open Space Technology.

Our Camp will be a slightly modified version of BarCamp/OST, but the main principle will be the same – the participants thenselves will be in charge of the programme of the day, which will be decided upon on arrival at the venue. We will publish more details soon!

This decision means that we will have to cancel the second round of the Call for Proposals – instead, we would like to ask anyone who wants to participate in Camp Pixelache to propose ideas already beforehand (this will be possible in a wiki page, we will add the link to Camp Pixelache page) and to show up on the day to participate.

We would like to thank Mike Bradshaw (organiser of BarCamp Helsinki events) and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen / YKON for helping us to develop the Camp Pixelache programme format.

Pixelache Software(s) of the Year 2010

Pixelache Software of the Year 2010 title has been awarded to…

APODIO by APO33

and

Puredyne by GOTO10

: : :

Puredyne and APODIO are ‘live CD’ projects – distribution versions of Gnu/Linux operating system, which boot on any PC laptop or desktop, including the intel-based Mac and x86 netbooks. These distributions are dedicated to creative multimedia tools for audio/video processing and real-time performance and aims to provide a full set of tools for the average media artists needs.

In addition to these two initiatives, we would like to draw attention to the practice of developing custom GNU/Linux distributions tailored for specific uses such as media production, audio/video streaming, hacktivism, art installations and more. Other such initiatives include dyne:bolic, Sahabuntu and PikseLiveCD.

Art and sustainability workshop

Still time to sign in for the pixelache art and sustainability workshop.  It will be held 23-24.1 at Ptarmigan by koelse.org and MIM-project from Estonia. In this workshop we will be thinking about different kinds of sustainability issues regarding production of art, focused on the issue of energy consumption.

At the moment art is becoming more and more dependent on electricity, and since our electricity production relies heavily on unsustainable methods it is our responsibility as artists to figure out better alternatives.

On our workshop we will be experimenting with different lo-tech sollutions for powering up our equipment and also think about the artistic possibilities of energy production.

So join us on our journey towards more sustainable forms of art-production.

To sign up for the workshop send me an email aahonen(AT)gmail.com
