EDIBLE SOLAR CELL WORKLAB: Temporary photoElectric Digestopians

Date: 10 March 2011
Location: Pajasali, Suomenlinna

A worklab where light energy is transformed into electric energy with food. Based on photovoltaic (solar) and culinary technologies and designs, the participants will experiment with mostly plant based edible materials creating ‘e-sandwiches/sushi’s’ that transform light into electricity. Aesthetics and tastes will be tested and appreciated on heliotropic tickling tongues.

The workshop is lead by Bartaku. The workshop is a part of Groworld Bazaar programme.

TIMELAB: THE MINI-CNC KIT

Date: 10 March 2011
Location: Pajasali, Suomenlinna

Over the past 9 months we have been developing a lasercut kit for a small, sturdy, desktop-sized,
computer-controlled milling machine. So far we have used it to mill wood, plexi, PCB’s and one table surface. We bring parts for 8 machines with us to Pixelache and would love to build them together with you.

The workshop is lead by Lieven Standaert (BE) & Kurt Van Houtte (BE) / Timelab. The Timelab Mini-CNC-kit is also presented at Camp Pixelache 2011 exhibition/lab.

Deptford TV

Date: 10 March 2011
Location: Pajasali, Suomenlinna Island

Deptford TV: C/Overt operations with CCTV sniffing and collaborative open source video editing.

This workshop will attempt to identify and document secret (covert) places, strategies and messages in our everyday surroundings. We will use overt, co-operative tactics and practice openness and transparency to push the covert into clearer view.

Our main tool for this workshop will be easily to obtained, simple to use and perfectly legal video receivers that can intercept the data collected by small CCTV video cameras often placed covertly in shops, offices and other public/private spaces. But we will also use ordinary media-gathering devices, our own eyes and ears and our social skills to identify and record evidence of covert operations in our midst, whether this is capturing gossip and rumour about the Suomenlinna’s Island fortress or observing city planners’ attempts to ‘design out’ specific social behaviours.

The workshop is lead by Adnan Hadzi (UK), Lisa Haskel (UK) and Larisa Blazic (UK).

MAPPING IN PROGRESS

Date: 10 March 2011
Location: Pajasali & Chapman, Suomenlinna Island

An open think-tank on concrete mapping projects in progress. It offers an opportunity to learn about different approaches to mapping ranging from social mapping and geographical mapping to mapping economy.

Esther Polak (NL), Ivar van Bekkum (NL), Wouter Van den Broeck (BE) and Christian Nold (UK) will introduce their artistic practice and put their current mapping projects up to discussion. At the same time, the workshop invites you to test your own ideas and concepts. It aims at generating ideas for new projects as much as improving existing concepts and may result in new collaborations.

The workshop is a part of map me if you will programme.

M.A.R.I.N. WORKSHOP: Environmental Sensors and Sensor Networks in Media Art

Dates: 7-12 march 2011
Location: Pajasali, Suomenlinna

The Pixelache workshop with M.A.R.I.N. brings together artists and developers working with environmental sensors which are either connected as a network or log their data. During the workshop we will set up two sensor setups on Suomenlinna island: SenseStage and API Tatsipaa sensor node. The main focus will be on Xbee networking, data retrieval and storage. How does context of media art impact these designs vs. sensor data management in scientific environmental monitoring?

Workshop leaders: Marije Baalman (NL), Tapio Mäkelä (FI), Mikko Sivulainen (FI), Tuomo Tammenpää (FI).

HACKTERIA: BIOELECTRONIX FOR ARTISTS

Dates: 8, 9, 10, 12 March 2011
Location: Pajasali, Suomenlinna

The workshop is an experimental maker-workshop with multilayered outcome for people interested in DIY-biology, microscopy and simple technological interaction with living microorganisms for example through sound. Participants will become involved in sourcing and isolating microorganisms from the environment and develop open hardware and software environments with which these organisms can be both viewed and become the subjects for simple interactions. A primary aim of the activity is to demonstrate that scientific/artistic experimentation can take place within the DIY and open source domains, and that biology and custom made electronics and software can be friends.

The workshop is lead by Marc R. Dusseiller (CH) & Andy Gracie (UK) /  Hackteria.
It is organised in collaboration with the Finnish Bioart Society.
